Too long poles can be trimmed, too short poles are gifts for a shorter friend.

 "Measure twice, cut once."

Ski pole length is not an absolute science - there can be quite a bit of personal preference involved, but should be reasonably close to the length determined by the methods below, or the same as that of your existing poles if that length is "right" for you.

In general, a pole that is much too long will "jam" your arms during pole plants and can be unwieldy. A pole that is much too short can cause you to reach and can result in fatigue.

We fabricate the e3 ski poles to the exact length you specify, but if you are in doubt, be assured that plus or minus an inch of "ideal" isn't fatal (the difference between planting in powder or slush as opposed to planting on ice or hardpack is more than that anyway.)

If you really are not sure whether to go with a 50" pole or a 52" pole you can always choose the 52" length and have it cut down later if needed (any ski shop or even you can do it. These carbon fiber poles are fairly easy to cut to length by removing the lower tip assembly and sawing off the proper amount from the shaft bottom)

With existing ski poles:

Measure your ski poles from top of grip to bottom of tip (entire length).

Without existing ski poles:

You really should have your boots and skis on to do this accurately. Otherwise, add about 2 inches to the length you determine below to account for the thickness of the boot sole and liner, and height of the skis and bindings. This is especially important with the newer ski/bindings that have tall carving plates.

Make a fist and hold your arm out in front of you with your elbow touching your side and your fist oriented as if you were holding a ski pole. Make sure that your forearm is parallel to the ground by having a helper direct you or by standing in front of a mirror. The distance from the floor to the top of your thumb is your pole length

Conversion factor:              1 inch = 2.54 centimeters

Use the following table as a crosscheck against above ski pole measurements. Results are more accurate if skier height is determined with ski boots on and actually clipped into your skis.
